In the episode, Professor Kirk shares his deep insight related to critical pedagogies of affect and also gives us a glimpse into two of his latest books, the first one Precarity, Critical Pedagogy and Physical Education and Models-based Practice in Physical Education that was co-authored with Dr. Ash Casey.

We begin this discussion talking about early days in David's life and how moving from Scotland to Australia really helped to shape his world view and the way came to better understand people and culture. David speaks about the role that physical activity and sport played in his life and how it led him toward a career in education and ultimately on the path to becoming a world renown educational researcher in his field.

David will challenge listeners from the physical education profession to think differently about how we might approach the future of our discipline in order to address the social and economic challenges that shape young people’s health, happiness and life chances.

About Professor Kirk
David is  currently Professor of Education and former Head of the School of Education (2014-17) at the University of Strathclyde. His is an educational researcher with teaching and research interests in educational innovation, curriculum history, and physical education and sport pedagogy. He is founding editor of the peer reviewed journal Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy (Routledge) and editor of Routledge Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport. He has held academic appointments previously in universities in England, Australia, Ireland and Belgium and is currently Honorary Professor of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland. His most recent book Precarity, Critical Pedagogy and Physical Education was published by Routledge in 2020. His most recent co-authored book with Dr Kimberly Oliver, Girls, Gender and Physical Education: An Activist Perspective, was published by Routledge in August 2015. A book co-edited with Professor Patricia Vertinsky (University of British Columbia) Female Traditions in Physical Education: 'Women First' Revisted was published by Routledge in 2016.
